Stockbridge Monday 13' 21 --Dearest Robert --

I have this moment been arrested in my domestic career by being told there was a chance to write you -- I shall follow your example & write 'in great haste' -- -- Mr May brought the paper & shoes -- I thank you very much for your attention to my troublesome commissions -- Little Kit's shoes fitted to a charm --

The Davs 1 arrived Saturday Eve'g & passed yesterday with us -- They were very interesting & we thought it a great treat to have them here -- --- Mary, Sister F & I went to Lenox in the Afternoon, to hear Nettleton who you know selon les 2 Davs is the Paul of the 19 Century -- -- He preached a very tame dull Methodist sermon -- All about awakening, revival & oppositions -- -- But Mary says, if you can awaken people -- Works will follow of course --

Mr Minot arrived yesterday afternoon, & had quite an agreeable meeting with his favorite Mary -- He stays with us 'till Thursday -- Dear Jane's wounds bleed afresh at the sight of every friend. -- But with her 2 usual resolution, and most lovely disinterestedness she withdraws from us and soon returns with her usual tranquility, illegible her countenance bears the traces of her grief 3 -- tho' her sweet smile shines on it like a sun beam on a beautiful landscape over which the blast & the rain have just past -- --

Sue and her treasures left us bright & early this morn'g with Geo. Pomeroy -- Mr M remains until Thursday -- -- Dear Robert would not it be well for you to write to our poor friends Mr and Mrs Tucker -- It will be a comfort to them in their desolation -- Eliza was the friend of our youth & has been the companion of many happy hours -- -- Mr M says Mrs Tucker has never felt any thing so much as her death -- Tho far from us dear Robert -- you are not very far from any of our thoughts -- May God preserve & bless you -- all send love

Aug. 1821 is written in the top margin of page 1

This is likely an abbreviation for the Davises, meaning the relatives of Sedgwick's close friend Louisa Davis Minot. This could include her father Daniel Davis II, Louisa herself, her much younger brother Charles, and her eldest daughter, Mary Minot , likely the Mary who traveled with Sedgwick and Frances Sedgwick Watson to Lenox.

French, meaning "according to the"

George Sedgwick, Sedgwick's sister-in-law Jane's two-year-old son, died in January1821.
