Last saturday we were again made happy by receiving letters from you I suppose that you have long before this you illegible heard of the election of Mr Jefferson there was great rejoicings at Pittsfield ringing the bell for joy they broke it they sang a most infamous song in which they mentioned Jeffersons the dandy that Ephraim Williams out of date Bacon is the dandy 1 and things much worse than this but this is foolish stuff for me to write

The time will soon elapse when you will once more return home I hope you will never go again as long Mama sends her best love to you it gratifys her very much to receive letters from you Mumbet wishes to be remembered to you I hope My Dear Papa that you will write me often 2

Variations of “Yankee Doodle” include references to Colonel Ephraim Williams, Jr. who died in 1755 during the French and Indian War, and left his estate to found a school that became Williams College. He was Sedgwick's mother's uncle, brother of Pamela Dwight Sedgwick's mother, Abigail Williams Dwight.
