Privacy Bank War Bank of the United States Banks, Pet House of Representatives Democratic Party
Washington Decr. 21. 1833 My Dear Sir

I received the letter from Mr. Kane & yourself today and wish I had more time to reply to it – You know I have always intended to select another Bank in Philadelphia & that there have been difficulties in the way – and if it had been done at first perhaps it would have been well – But at this moment I could not add another without weakening the Girard Bank against which the whole power of the U. S. Bank & its coadjutors are now directed. – The change at this moment cannot be made I think – And as for the pressure, the panic which the Bank has2 by means of its friends & presses designedly & successfully created in Philadelphia has chiefly occasioned it. I must stand firm in my present position – And our friends here are equally firm – and although the adversary will produce delay yet there is no danger. Our majority in the House of representatives is certain & determined

Your answer to the Bank was most happy & successful – our friends have been highly pleased with it – & it has had a powerful effect –

in much haste / very truly yours R. B. Taney

shew this to Mr. Kane
