Old Point July 11. 1855 My Dear Sir

You were kind enough to say that you would attend to any business for me while I am at Old Point. – I have not paid my taxes – & there is some discount on them if paid before the 1st. of August. – But I do not know the amount, and cannot therefore send a check for them to the Collector – nor indeed do I know the name of the present Collector. – Will you do me the favor to ascertain the amount due if paid this month, and the name of the person in whose favor I must check; & let me know.

I must ask you also to take a little trouble for me in another matter – my daughter Mrs Taylor, is at my house with her little boy & has remained behind from the fear of Measles here. – But she is coming this week2 to stay at my cottage. She is not by any means practical in matters of business – and as she is so entirely alone that I am anxious about her while she remains there. – Mr. Campbell and his family are away – and Mrs Stevenson is in the Country – and my kind neighbor Teackle is also in the Country. – Will you be kind enough as you pass the house, call & see her & render her such assistance and counsel as you may think necessary. I know of no one of whom I would so readily ask this kindness, as I know it would give you pleasure to render it.

I was sick in bed in Richmond and for some days after my return. But Mrs Taney & myself have improved greatly within the last week & I am now as well as usual –

We all join in best regards to you and Mrs Perine & the young ladies

With true regard Dr. Sir / ever yours R. B. Taney
