300 16. IV.20. Wednesday. Mrs Relief Harris Alpheus Spear’s Son

Mrs Harris is an old woman, residing at Stoughton, widow of a Revolutionary Soldier named Oliver Harris, who enjoyed a Pension for a year and a half before he died, but she thinks he was wronged, and was entitled to it for a longer time than he received it— General Dearborn presented a Petition for her at the last Session of Congress and it was referred to a Committee, I suppose the Widows Committee, but they did not report. She wished me to see to its being revived, which I promised to do. She left with me two Papers, and told me a long Story with which it will be impossible for me to charge my Memory— But she promised that either Genl. Dearborn, or Squire Tolman should write me a statement of the facts in the case. Alpheus Spear sent his Sons with his last Quarter’s Rent— I planted several short rows of Apple-seeds Pear Cores, Nuts and Cherries in the Nursery and found that the Apple of the central tree, just now ripe is an excellent fruit— I was occupied great part of the day in copying Stanzas for the 3d. Edition of Dermot MacMorrogh; and wrote a short Letter to Saml. N. Sweet—at Adams Jefferson County New-York— The autumnal rains have commenced and there is a prospect that the Springs will be replenished— I wasted part of the Evening in meditation upon the signs of the Zodiac in the fourth Book of the Astronomics of Manilius.
