Mr Graham called with a list of eight Clerks in the General Land Office, four of whom he was under a necessity of dismissing; and as he could not take upon him to make a selection he proposed to let them draw lots to determine which of them should remain, and which should go out— I spoke to him of the Letter I had received from the Senators and Representatives from the State of Alabama, requesting that no Sales of relinquished Lands in that State should be made this year— They had a Bill before Congress for the new regulation of this subject, but it did not work through— In other States where there are relinquished Lands, Graham said the Delegations were desirous that the Sales should be made, and he added that it would be of some importance to the Revenue. Mr Handy came to ask indulgence for the debt due from the Presbyterian Church to me— He said they were much pressed to pay the debt to Mrs Meigs, and I told him I wished them to discharge that before thinking of mine— He said they had much increased in numbers, but not in wealth— William Lee, third Auditor and R. Cutts—second Comptroller came to speak of the claims of the Staff Officers residing here for arrears of double rations. Cutts left with me a number of papers concerning it— Mr Little came to solicit a continuation of employment in recording the Patents at the Patent-Office— There was a Bill passed the House of Representatives making appropriations for two recording Clerks at the Patent Office; but for want of time failed in the Senate— Livingston came to take leave—and shewed me a miniature of his daughter painted by InmanMr Marks introduced Mr. M’Millan a member of the Legislature of Virginia— Clarke, brought a Report of a Committee of the House of Representatives, upon complaints against District Attornies— Referred by the House to the President.
