Mr Sanford a Senator from New-York, called and I had conversation with him concerning the Treaty deed of the Seneca Indians to R. Troup,    Ogden and Rodgers, which I sent to the Senate, and which they retained without acting upon it— It seems they propose to make a Georgia question of it—whether the Government of the United States have properly any agency in the matter— Sanford said it would be fully discussed at the next Session of the Senate— Mr M’Lean the Postmaster General came with the Petition and papers in the case of a person named Doolittle, a Clerk in a Post-Office in Vermont, who took money from a Letter, and is under indictment for it upon his own Confession— As he made the disclosure, under a rebuke of Conscience, is repentant, and bears otherwise a good character, his friends are anxious that a Noli Prosequi should arrest the trial, rather than take a pardon upon conviction. I desired Mr M’Lean to direct the District Attorney in Vermont to discontinue the prosecution— John Williams of Tennessee called before his departure to return home— He spoke of Governor Carroll, General Jackson, Felix Grundy, and G. W. CampbellMrs Royall brought a copy of her new novel The Tennesean and said she heard I was to be ousted, but then I should be as worthy after it as before— Scott the late Member from Missouri came to take leave— Said he was perfectly satisfied with the appointment of Eskridge as Judge, and of Beverley Allen as Attorney in Missouri; and that he should go home entirely contented. Dr Sewall came and invited me to attend the Medical Commencement of the Columbian College, at Noon to-morrow; which I promised if not otherwise engaged— Richard Peters called with a youth named Bolivar, a nephew of the Colombian Libertador, who has been four years studying at Philadelphia, and is now going to the University of Virginia— Peters comes to ask for the appointment of Reporter to the Supreme Court in place of WheatonFrye came to say he found it would not be necessary to concentrate in one person all the Land titles in the Heirs of Joshua Johnson— Company to dine— Bartlett, Bayard, Bolivar, Frye, Joseph R. and A. W. Ingersoll M’Lean Markoe’s, two. Peters, Sanford, Southard Stewart, Taylor, Dr Wallace, Webster, Wheaton and John Williams— Judge Burnett Miss Brooks, Mr and Mrs Everett, Mr Este, and C. J. Ingersoll did not come— In the Evening I was idle— Johnson Hellen went on Monday to Rockville: to attend the County Court.
