6. V:30— Walked an hour—

Smith. Constantine Erwin Dydenhoven Ridgate B. C. Roberdeau— Coll.

Smith came to express his grateful acknowledgments upon receiving the appointment of a Lieutenant in the Marine Corps— Mr. Erwin is the Son in Law of Mr Clay, and left him with his family at Lebanon, in the State of Ohio, the 25th. of last Month. Brought me a Letter of that date from Mr Clay— His daughter was yet dangerously ill and he knew not when he should be able to proceed on his journey— Mr Dydenhoven, and Mr 898Ridgate were applicants for Offices. Coll. Roberdeau came to take leave—going with his daughters Mary and Susan to the Bedford Springs.

We dined at 2. O’Clock—Mr Erwin, and Mr Tench Ringgold the Marshal of the District, dined with us— At 4—General La Fayette, his Son G. W. Mr Ringgold and I, departed, on a visit to Mr Monroe at Oakhill— My Son John and Mr Le Vasseur went with us— And the General’s Valet de Chambre Bastien and Antoine Michel Giusta, in a Carry all with one horse took the baggage— William the Groom followed us on horseback. We crossed the Potowmack Bridge, and rode 16 Miles to Fairfax Court-house. Arrived there just after Sunset, at 7 in the Evening and lodged at Bronaugh’s Hotel— Several of the Residents in the Neighbourhood came to pay their respects to General La-Fayette
