27. VI:30. Immediately after rising this morning I was taken with a severe Rhumatism, which continued through the day, but without confining me to the house. Had a succession of visitors at the House and Office, which consumed the day. G. Sullivan, Mr Southard, Secretary of the Navy. Mr Mower of New-York, W. Findlay and D. H. Miller, with Messrs. Shuck, Mitchell, Hays and another, members of the Pennsylvania Legislature. Jonn. Jennings and judge Call the new member from Indiana, in the place of Mr Prince deceased. Mr Tyson of New-York respecting one of the Antwerp claims on France, and also a certain claim before the late Florida commission— Alexr. Scott for the Mission to Guatemala; and Southard again to introduce Genl. Wall, and a Mr Dayton, of New-Jersey— At the Office, Mr Barrell, James Barbour the Senator from Virginia, Commodore Stewart with Wyer; the Baron de Mareuil, and G. B. English— Mareuil wanted the copy of the President’s answer to his speech, and I called at the President’s for it— He promised to send it this Evening—I dined at Mr Southard’s, with Genl Jackson and Mr Eaton. Genl. Wall and Dayton, Calhoun, Crowninshield, Cambreleng Holcombe &c— Evening party and Ball at Genl. Brown’sMrs Adams Elizabeth and Charles went with me. No others of the family— Mary Hellen was confined to her chamber—
