24. V:30. Sunday

Five inches deep of Snow— Morning service at the Presbyterian Church, by Mr Hopkins who visited me yesterday with Mr Fowler— His Sermon was from 1. Corinthians 15.33. [“]Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.”—a plain practical moral discourse addressed chiefly to the young without any ambition of style, and without one particle of 713calvinistic doctrine in it. After dinner I attended at St. John’s Church, where a stranger, an Irishman read prayers for the 4th. Sunday in Advent, and preached from Acts 24.25. [“]And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance and judgment to come, Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee.” The preacher told his auditory plainly that however severely they might censure Felix for his conduct they were habitually doing the same thing themselves— In the Evening I read the Introduction and first Chapter of Miss Martineau’s Society in America—
