446 Monday 18. May 1835 From Washington to Baltimore.

18. V. Monday.

Mrs Adams was so much recovered as to be up and about the house— Mr Frye came immediately after breakfast— I went with him to Mr R. S. Briscoe of the Treasury Department, who with Lund Washington attested my power of Attorney to Nathanl Frye, of which he then as a magistrate took the acknowledgment. I gave it with the Letter of Instructions to Mr Frye— I called at Mr Blake the Bookbinder’s for his Bill but he was not at his shop. I sent to engage a Seat in one of the Stages that were to leave the City at two O’Clock for Baltimore, but received for answer that they were all full, and not a seat was to be had. All the extra Stages too were at the other end of the line having been engaged to carry persons to the races— I found it impossible to procure a seat in any one stage to go this day— I wrote to Mr Nicholas Biddle to announce my disappointment at being unable to reach Philadelphia to dine with him to-morrow as I had promised; but as a last effort I went to Smith the livery Stable keeper, and engaged a light barouche and pair of horses to take me this Night to Baltimore— He came between four and five, and asked me to take in as a fellow passenger a Mr Clark who was anxiously wishing to get to Baltimore this Evening; to which I consented— Walter Hellen came up from Alexandria, and will stay with the Ladies till they follow me— We started in the open Barouche just before five, and without stopping even to feed the horses, we arrived at Barnum’s Hotel in Baltimore a quarter of an hour before Midnight the House was full and not a chamber to be had, but Captain Ballard of the Navy, gave up to me his chamber for the Night, he himself having a bed made up for him in the chamber of Captain Dallas who was also there. I sat with them in Captain Dallas’s chamber, conversing upon the races, the Convention for announcing a Candidate for the succession to the Presidency, now assembling here, the state of affairs with France, and the rumours of resignation of the Secretaries Forsyth and Cass, till near two in the Morning, when I retired to bed.
