13— V.

Bumford Colonel

The Equinoxtial storm continued with heavy rain in the night and deprived me of the exercise both of walking and riding— It did not however deprive me of sleep nor of the power of reading in the day I confined it chiefly to the Universelle Religion par Dupuis— His system is that the source of all Religion including Christianity is the Worship of the Sun under various modified time, and he has long and tedious Commentaries upon the Deification of Hercules of Thesius and of Baccus— All degenerating into Fabulus Legions but all terminating in Astronomical phenomena—representing the annual course of the Sun connected with that of the moon. Dupuis is not the original inventor or discoverer of this System but he has spun it out into 12 or 14 volumes and with an array of antiquity never perhaps excuded— Col. George Bumford visited us, and dined with us, returning by the Cars to Boston after dinner at 1/2 past three oclock.
