I drew upon the Bank of the Metropolis, a check of thirty-three dollars and thirty cents, being the balance, in my favor there, and I received a check from the Speaker of the House, for three hundred dollars— At the House, the Committees were called for Reports on the motion of Thomas B. King. A Bill, introduced yesterday, by E. D. Culver of New York, and then referred to the Committee of the whole on the State of the Union, was this day taken from that Committee, and referred to the Committee on Naval Affairs— Its object is, to increase the naval force of the United States— After sundry Reports, from the Committees 433on Invalid and Revoluntary Pension Claims, all but two adverse to the Claims.— The Rules were suspended, and the States and Territories called for resolutions; the unfinished business, of yesterday— The Resolution for supplying the Reporters, with Documents, was carried by yeas and nays, 113. to 53. Orlando. B. Ficklin of Illinois, moved that the Bill, making appropriations, for extending the Cumberland Road, through the States of Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, be made the special order, for the first Monday in March; laid over for Debate, as was, the Resolution offered by Robert Smith of Illinois, instructing the Committee of Foreign Affairs, to inquire into the expediency, of purchasing the Island of Cuba— A Message was received from the President, with a Report from the Attorney General, relating to a Contract of Littell, and Brown, for the publication of an edition of Laws of the United States— Referred, to the Committee of Ways and Means— The Pension Appropriation Bill, was resumed— The Amendments reported from the Committee, of the whole, were adopted, and an Amendment offered by John W. Tibbatts, of Kentucky to extend the provisions of the Bill, in favor of Widows, married before the first of January 1800, instead of 1794—was excluded by the Speaker, as not in order— The Bill was then passed— The Indian Appropriation Bill, was then taken up, and partly debated— Hugh. A. Haralson of Georgia, gave notice, that he would call up tomorrow, the Bill reported by the Military Committee, for raising two additional Regiments of Riflemen, and the House, at half past three, adjourned.— There was a Dinner, this day, at Coleman’s Hotel, given by the American Officers, of those of Great Britain, employed on the Survey of the North Eastern Boundary, to which, I had received an invitation, as a guest, but declined, on account of family affliction— Isaac Hull Adams had been here yesterday, in great trouble about arranging, the seats, of the Company, at this Dinner, according to the rules of Etiquette—which we found it impossible, to settle satisfactorily, and so the seats, were taken at haphazard, but without giving, mortal offence— There was an evening Party and Ball, at Mr. Seatons, the Mayor of the City, which we also declined to attend.
