The Sun rose from the corner of Charles’s house directly behind the trunk of an English
white oak tree. The thermometer at the Northwest corner of Charles’s
house, stood at the same point as at my South front door— I received
this morning Letters 1. from judge

Mitchel same date—informing me of the receipt of my Letter
of the 3d. and of the Resolution of the
Astronomical Society fixing Thursday the 9th. of November, instead of the 7th. as the day, for laying the corner stone of the

Burgess of Erie Pennsylvania, enclosing an authenticated copy of a
Resolution of the Burgess and Town Council of the borough of Erie,
tendering to me the hospitality of the town, and an invitation to me to

Kelley, chairman of a Meeting of Citizens of Cleveland
Ohio, and its vicinity, held 14. October, and enclosing copy of a
Resolution adopted at that meeting, and inviting me to Cleveland, with a
Resolution for the appointment of a Committee of 25 to make suitable

Greenleaf was here, and took from the town library some
books for others which he returned— John
Adams, master of a Cape Cod Coaster came to enquire
concerning a claim to be repaid a sum of 90 dollars, levied upon him by
the collector at Ocracoke, North Carolina, for omitting to deliver his
manifesto— He had sent his claim last winter to the late Mr
Burnell, who shortly before his death had written to
Captain Adams that he thought there would be little difficulty in
recovering the money; but it did not appear that a petition had been
presented to the house— I told Captain Adams that if he would have a
petition prepared and forwarded to me before the meeting of Congress,
together with the document from the collector shewing that he had levied
the fine, I would present the petition, and attend to it as far as I may
be able— Charles went to Boston and returned to dine. I sent up the hill
a box of Haut-Brion wine of the old stores from Washington in the
central cellar. there remain of these only 3 boxes of Medoc St Julien, and the box from Tain. Time
presses upon me like a breaking upon a wheel, and at 11. this evening I
brought to a sudden and abrupt termination my astronomical discourse, 54
pages—of which I must select for delivery about one third. It is relief
to me inexpressible to have got through— The undertaking was rash and
presumptuous. My reputation is now staked upon it; and I pray for the
blessing of fortitude to the consummation—
