Mr Ezekiel Bacon called on me early this morning.— Though chairman of the Committee of arrangements for my reception at Utica, such was the confusion in the crowd and darkness of last evening, that he missed of meeting me. I was taken into a Carriage, and brought to Mr Johnson’s through a dense mass of population. I know not how or by whom— They brought me by the torch light procession of the firemen— From the porch of Mr Johnson’s house I thanked them for their kindness and I said I hoped and trusted we should all devote this day to the worship and service of almighty God; and that to-morrow, I should have the happiness of meeting again my fellow citizens face to face, when I should endeavour to find words to thank them for their kindness— Mr Brooks was also lost for some time in the crowd; and Mrs Charles though in the charge of William C. Johnson was so much alarmed that she actually screamed. John Quincy, in charge of Perry, got through without difficulty, and we were all received with kindness and cordiality by Mr Johnson and all his family— This morning, with Mr Brooks, Mr Johnson and Mr Bacon attended us to the episcopal church—where the minister Mr Proal read the morning service for the 7th. Sunday after Trinity and preached an excellent and elegant sermon from Revelation 6.2. “And I saw, and behold a white horse; and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering and to conquer”— Whole family dinner at Mr Johnson’s. After dinner I went with Mr. Bacon to the Dutch Church—where Mr Knox preached from Proverbs, 14.9 “Fools make a mock at sin: but among the righteous there is favour.” The discourse was confined to the first clause of the text— At 7. in the evening, I went again with Mr Bacon to the Presbyterian Church, and heard its Minister, Mr Porter from Psalm 104.34. “My meditation of him shall be sweet: I will be glad in the Lord.[”] A very cheerful and cheering discourse upon the pleasures of sincere piety.
