Huygens, the younger Rush— Richard

Morning visits from Mr Huygens, the Chargé d’Affaires from the king of Holland—and from Mr Rush— Huygens told me that his father was now at Copenhagen, where he had been minister from the Batavian Republic, many years. We conversed upon European Affairs, and the great defeat of the Turkish Sultan’s army, by Ibrahim the Son of the Bashaw of Egypt— I told Huygens I hoped Constantinople would soon become a European and a Christian City, and that the Religion of Mahomet would become extinct like the Paganism of the Greeks, and Romans— The imposture of Mahomet, and the influence it has exercised over the opinions and the history of mankind, are among the impenetrable mysteries of Providence— Mr Rush said he had nearly completed the sale of his House, and should return home next week— He has had one or more interviews with Mr Van Buren, which may possibly have some influence on his future 52political opinions and conduct. I returned the visits of Mr Van Buren, and his Son, by Cards— Went to judge Cranch’s house, where I acknowledged a Deed from the Executors of Ward N. Boylston to Daniel T. Brigham, Isaac Davis and Perley Goddard, of Lands in Princeton; but afterwards thinking it imperfect, I enclosed it to my Son Charles. I completed the revisal of the Report of the Committee of Manufactures (that is of the Minority) printed as a Congressional Document; but have not been able to dispose of my time these three days, as I had predetermined— I see by an extract from the Hingham Gazette in the Boston Press this day received, that my Election to Congress will be opposed on the ground of anti-masonry.
