Finished the version of the 49th. Psalm, and began that of the 50th—both admirable compositions—beautiful Poems—Sublime Lyrics, and in my translations mortifying failures— I cannot write in sickness as in health— In versifying an Ode like the 49th. or the 50th. Psalm, one should be inspired like those who wrote them— I received Morning visits from several members of Congress, and as there was Snow on the ground, and my Cough is growing daily worse and worse I rode out to return visits—Called at the lodgings of Mr Johnston of Louisiana, Mr Clay and General Pitcher, neither of whom was at home— I found General Chambers the Senator from Maryland at his lodgings—and Mr William Biddle Shepard, a member of the House from North-Carolina— Mr White of Florida was also there— At Gadsbys I found Mr, Mrs and Miss Silsbee. Mr Krehmer came in while I was there— I had sent to him with a request that he would forward it a Letter from Mr Middleton, to Count Cancrin the Russian Minister of the Interior— It contains the enquiries respecting the employment of Platina by the Russian Government for coin, which Mr Middleton had at my solicitation promised to make.— Mr Krehmer told me he had received, and would forward it by the first Packet for Liverpool— Mr Silsbee last Spring made some enquiries of me, concerning the character and family of Mr Krehmer, intimating that he was paying his addresses to Miss Silsbee— Since then it has been reported that a schism had taken place. 319There was a movement of perceptible reserve this day on the part of Miss Silsbee when Krehmer came in— But none on the part of the father and mother— So I concluded it was the redintegratio amoris that was coming on— I wrote this day to Miss Eliza S. Quincy to thank her for her two Landscape drawings of my fathers birthplace and mine, and of his last Residence and now mine at Quincy.
