Smith— William S. White Joseph M.

According to my practices heretofore I resumed the reading of three chapters in the bible every day, beginning at the tenth Chapter of Genesis— Walked round the Capitol Hill, and composed two Stanzas of the version of the 37th. Psalm— In my walk I met Jonathan Elliot, who told me that he had lost his wife and one of his Sons on one day. I met also Colonel Roger Jones, adjutant General of the Army and his three SonsWilliam Lee, lately arrived with his wife from Boston, and Peter Hagner.— William S. Smith called on me before dinner; and Joseph M. White the delegate from Florida— Just returned, from an excursion into Virginia, where he saw Mr Madison, Governor Floyd, and others of their politicians— Floyd he says, is violently opposed to the present Administration of the General Government, and so are Tazewell and Tyler, but know not upon whom to concentrate their votes in opposition.— The grounds of opposition in all of them are indeed selfish and puerile— I ought now to have taken up seriously the arrears of this diary, but wasted almost the whole day in reading Newspapers.— There are curious and somewhat whimsical correspondences in the State of Massachusetts, connected with their Elections for the several branches of the State Government which takes place this day— Specially of Mr Samuel Lathrop the Anti-Masonic Candidate for Governor, and Mr Leverett Saltonstall a candidate for election as a Senator in the County of Essex—one at Springfield and the other at Salem— Mr White advised me to go and secure a Seat in the Hall of the House of Representatives.
