16. IV:30—Tuesday.

Adams Thomas B. Elizabeth C. Adams

I went to Boston this morning with John Kirke; with the purpose of attending a Meeting of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences— But on going to the Apartment of the Academy, N. 50. State Street, I found it locked up, and conclude that the Meeting was held last Tuesday, though I received a printed notice of it only last Thursday— I met Degrand in the Street, and he called at my Son Charles’s Office to consult my opinion, whether a War would break 36out in Europe, before the next Spring— I thought not— Mr Curtis also called and returned to me the Letter from the Brothers Baring, relating to the affairs of William Vaughan, and the Bonds of Petty Vaughan as Administrator of Thomas Boylston and of Ward N. Boylston. Mr Curtis said he had at Mrs Boylston’s request consulted Mr Lowell, who was of opinion that nothing could be done— He spoke also of the unsuccessful attempt to sell Mr Boylston’s Neponset Bridge Shares; for which Daniel Greenleaf offered 500 dollars each, but Mr Curtis bought them in—but inclined to let Mr Greenleaf have them now, if he would take them at his bid— I promised to speak of it to Mr Greenleaf— I had prepared the Account and papers relating to the Execution of my father’s Will, to be submitted to the judge of Probate, at Dedham on the 7th. of next month: expecting to have met President Quincy my Co-Executor in Boston— He was not there, and I left the Papers which must be approved and in part signed by him, with my Son Charles— Dined with him; and examined the Oxford Edition of Cicero of 1783. of ten Quarto Volumes; and professing to be from the text of D’Olivet’s Edition— It has neither Notes nor Arguments— I took out with me the 10th. and 12th Volume, of Welles and Lilly’s reprint of the last Edition of Ernesti— These Volumes contain his Prefaces to the Volumes of the Epistles— I came home about Sunset— Elizabeth C. Adams had spent the day here, and was just going home— I received a Letter from Benjamin Vaughan, and one from Dr Waterhouse with two or three proof Sheets of his projected book upon Junius.
