Mr Ruggles a Senator from Ohio, introduced Mr Banks a young Lawyer from Pennsylvania—and Mr Butman a member of the House of Representatives from Maine, came with Mr Cummings of Portland. Their principal object was to dissuade me from the appointment of a Mr Mitchell as Postmaster at that place, on account of his opposition to the administration— Governor Barbour was here twice—first with a Memoir by Genl Gaines, of twelve sheets of Paper in support of his claim of precedence over General Scott—and the second time, with the proceedings of a Court Martial upon three Cadets at the Military Academy at West-Point— They are all three sentenced to be dismissed, but Coll. Thayer the Superintendant recommends the remission of the Sentence in the case of John H Barney, a Son of John Barney, member of the House from Baltimore— Mr Rush brought an Account of Thomas Scott a Lawyer of the State of Ohio, for some business transacted as Counsel for the United States in certain Suits before the State Courts; and in which there have been appeals to the Supreme Court of the United States. General Metcalfe introduced the Reverend Mr Stephenson a Clergyman from Kentucky, and Mr Seymour a Senator from Vermont, the Revd Mr GriffinMajor Kirby, one of the Paymasters of the Army, and who married a daughter of the late General Brown was here— I sent Messages to the Senate N. 23. with a Treaty signed the 11th. of last Month by John Tipton, Indian Agent, and the Pottawatami Tribe of Indians and N. 24. with Nominations. There was a heavy Thunder gust, and Shower between 4 and 6. O’Clock this afternoon— I sat an hour this morning to Mr Harding— We had company to dine— William Barton, Jerome Bonaparte, B. W. and Mrs Crowninshield, their Son, and daughter Mary, Warren R. Davis, Mr Davis, Clement and Miss Dorsey, Edward Everett, Mr Flaujac, Benjamin Gorham, Mr and Mrs Greig, Mr Griffin, J. P. and Mrs Hall, Dr and Mrs Heermann, Mr Le Roy, Richard M’MichaelGeorge M. Owen, William Patterson, John Julius Pringle, Edward J. Pringle, Horatio Seymour, Nathaniel Mrs and Miss Silsbee, William Smith, Andrew and Mrs Stewart, Jesse B. Thomas, Stephen, Mrs and Miss Van Rensselaer, and Daniel Webster, the underscored did not come. In the Evening I read the proceedings of the Court-Martial at West Point, approved the Sentences, and remitted the penalty of dismission in the case of Cadet John H. Barney.
