14. V. Boston.

Davis— I. P. Quincy— Josiah Hall— Joseph

George came to Boston in the Stage, and I came in the Chaise with Antoine. I called at Mr James H. Foster’s, and saw his wife and two daughters; and Louisa Smith, to whom I delivered a Letter from Mrs Clark at Utica— I then came to the Exchange Hotel where Mr Davis and Mr Quincy, immediately afterwards called upon me— I agreed with Mr Davis if the weather should be fair next Tuesday, to come into Boston, and go with a party of Gentlemen, upon a fishing excursion in the Steam boat. Mr Quincy went with me to Mr Harding the Painter’s—to whom I sat, about an hour for my Portrait. I dined with my Son Charles at Mr Joseph Coolidge’sMrs T. M. Randolph the daughter of Mr288Jefferson, and her daughter, wife of Mr Joseph Coolidge junr. were there; also two Sons and two daughters of Mr Coolidge— Mr Kerr the member of Congress from Maryland, Mr P. C. Brooks, Lloyd N. Rogers, E. Everett, Dr. George Parkman, Loammi Baldwin, Professor Farrar, and two or three others— I called in the Evening at Mr B. L. Pickman’s, and at Judge Hall’s. He walked with me to my lodgings where he sat in conversation with me about half an hour— The conversation was painful to me, as he touched successively upon almost every topic of public concern, which wears inauspicious aspects— He spoke in the Spirit of friendship, and perhaps expecting from me assurances that would remove some of his apprehensions. I had none to give.
