21. V. Bath— Dined at Boston with D Webster— Returned at Night to Quincy

Kent Joseph Govr. Culbreth Doane Lloyd— Edward jr Peyton— Mr and Mrs Ritchie— Miss Quincy— Josiah. Mr Peyton’s Son

The coldness of the weather, rains, and a smart touch of Rhumatism, at the close of last week, have interrupted my Seawater baths till this morning when at 10. I went in at the wharf with T. B. Adams junr. and with Antoine— At eleven the Mayor of Boston came out with Governor Kent of Maryland his two Aide de Camps Colls Culbreth and Doane, a Mr and Mrs Peyton of Richmond, Virginia, with their Son and Miss Ritchie, daughter to the Editor of the Richmond Enquirer. They had been visiting the railway, which was one of the Governor’s objects in this excursion from his State— He told me that he had seen my wife, and her part of the family, at Saratoga Springs last Thursday Evening. He said he proposed leaving Boston, upon his return home next Friday— At a quarter past two I went with Antoine into Boston, and called at Dr. Welsh’s where I saw his daughter Harriet, and my Son George, who came out to Quincy in the Stage. I dined at Mr Webster’s with Governor Kent and his aids, Mr Bailey from the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Messrs. Thorndike, B. Joy, G Blake, D. Sears, W. Elliot, T. Fuller, and two or three others. Mrs Webster told me that Mr and Mrs Agg, had been these five or six weeks at Boston. Mr Thornton urged me warmly to pay him a visit at Beverley. In the Evening I returned to Quincy, and found company at my brothers. Mr and Mrs John Greenleaf, with Louisa Smith, and Mary Norton, Mr Marston and his family, Mr G. Beale and his niece Miss Wayles— A Son of Mr Pleasonton was also here, a visitor to T. B. Adams junr. Louisa Smith told me she should return to Boston to-morrow. I wrote to the Secretary of War— Planted Plumstones, and apple and pear seeds in seedling bucket N. 3.— One of the striped Vine worms chrysalized this day on a Vine leaf— The English walnut worms feed, grow, and have turned nearly black.
