25. VI. Christmas day— Walk round Tyber Square 40 minutes— Fog— Rain

Rode to the Roman Catholic Church of St. Patrick’s, and heard the Mass performed. Also a Discourse upon the day, delivered by the Bishop of Charleston, John England. 45He spoke from the platform in front of the altar; without pulpit, and without taking a text— With allusion to the festival of the day he considered the influence of Christianity upon the fortunes and happiness of mankind, by describing the condition of human Society before that time, and by comparing it with that of the ages subsequent to the birth of Christ, to the present time. This review opened a very wide field, upon which he largely descanted. He was at least an hour and a half speaking—without notes, and apparently without preparation, at least as to the language— He defended the Church of Rome against the charge of opposing the progress of physical Science, and particularly with regard to Copernicus and Galileo— He expressed very liberal principles of religious toleration, and besought charitable contributions for the Establishment of a Catholic theological seminary at Charleston—for which a Collection was taken up. A long Mass, followed after the Bishop’s discourse, and notice was given that he would preach again at four O’Clock on the same subject— It was half past two before I got home, and the weather was so bad that I did not again go out this day.
