12. IV. Monday.

Field Harvey Foster William E

There came a man with a subscription paper from Edmund M. Blunt for six or seven Charts, and to the amount of 80 dollars. He brought a Letter from Blunt, but I declined the subscription— Harvey Field brought me three Certificates of three Shares in the Quincy Canal transferred by him to me, together with a Note from the Treasurer of the Corporation for 70. Dollars, to Adam Curtis, and endorsed by him—which I take in payment of his years rent, and give him a check for 20 dollars— He pressed me for the payment of the Tax assessed upon me, which I declined until I should receive the explanation of the Assessors promised me by Captain Souther, what the property is for which I am taxed. I unpacked two more boxes of my Books, and consumed much of the Morning in examining old Title Deeds— After dinner, I rode with T. B. Adams junr to Mr Asa French’s—the town Clerk of Braintree— My object was to ascertain the bounds of my Pine-hill woodlands, by the Town records; but Mr French was not at home and my work is to do over again— They were Common Lands sold by a Committee of the Town in 1765. of which Committee my father was a member— Mr French’s daughter shewed me the Town Record Books— I found the proceedings of the Town and the appointment and Report of the Committee; but they refer to Plans, of which French’s daughter knew nothing, and which are probably lost or destroyed. The records only led me into enquiries concerning the History of the Braintree Common Lands, which I had not time to pursue— After an hours examination of the Record, Sunset approaching I returned home, and found W. E. Foster, who had come out from Boston for his Sister— We spent the Evening at Mr Whitney’s, and after our return W. and E. Foster left us for Boston. The day was so warm that I had no fire in my chamber, but a clear Northwester brought cold weather again at Night— Going to French’s this afternoon, I stop’d at Josiah Brigham’s and left the Certificates of transferred Canal Shares, for Certificates in my name to be made out. Also at Harvey Field’s, and Henry Hardwick’s, neither of whom was at home.
