21. VI. J. Bailey here— Mrs HellenLieutt. Mayo with despatches from Commodore Stewart at Valparaiso— At the Office— Found Mr Nelson there— Afterwards came Mr H. Allen, with more enquiries— And Mr Canning finally came for a two hours Conversation— Slave-trade— Colonial Intercourse, right of search and European Politicks— Wants further explanations and answers to his last Notes. I told him I would answer them— Shewed me a Note from Chateaubriand of 23. January, and a reply from G. Canning of 28 January, being the sequel to the Correspondence he had shewn me before. The last takes in the most distinct and explicit manner the ground of denying the right of warning against Spain to change her internal Constitution— Mrs. A. Hellen with her son Walter here from Alexandria.
