1. V:15. Change of weather in the morning— Chill North-east wind— Bath with John at the wharf, and swam near half an hour. Shaw went to Boston in the Stage— I wrote a few lines of poetry in the Album of my niece Elizabeth Coombs Adams at her request. I spent some time in examining the old Volume of Church Records, and traced my Ancestors back to the baptism of my Grandfather John, son of Joseph Adams in 1691— He was the son of another Joseph who died in 1694. at the age of 68 years in 1694. he must have been born therefore in England in 1626. He was one of the seven Sons of Henry Adams the first emigrant of the family, and who was one of the first settlers of the town of Braintree— Dr Holbrook came over this morning to see my Coachman Joseph Abbot, who was seized yesterday with a bilious fever— Mrs Hall, formerly Elizabeth Smith came out to dine at my fathers— Shaw sent us out from Boston a Man to drive our Carriage— Dined with Mrs Adams, and George at Governor Eustis’s at Roxbury— It was rather a tumultuary party— Coll. Haynes, a Senator elect from South-Carolina, and W. S. Archer, member of the House of Representatives from Virginia were of the Company— Also Mr John Brazier, and Rufus G. Amory— About the middle of the dinner 126the Antient and Honourable Artillery came out from Boston, and paraded in the Governor’s yard in front of his House. He reviewed them, and they gave him a Salute— The Officers were invited into the house; and refreshments were served to the company in a marquee in the yard. In the Evening we came in to Boston, and took lodgings at the Exchange Coffee-House, kept by Major Hamilton one of the Officers of the same antient and honourable Artillery Company— Mr Thomas B. Johnson, my wife’s brother also lodges at the same house. And also W. S. Shaw— Mr Joseph Hall the Sheriff called in the Evening to see us.
