5. VII. At St. John’s Church A.M. heard a Mr Meade of Virginia, from Romans 10.6.7.8.9— Salvation by faith alone. An eloquent preacher— Very large Mail— Heard Little in the afternoon. Luke 6.27.28. Love your enemies— Benevolence and Charity— Mr Petry, the French Consul-General, Dr Thornton, and Miss S. Forest were here this Evening, but I did not see them. Met Gales this afternoon— Asked him, if he should republish my answer to Genl. Smyth, to publish it entire in one paper— He said they would, but doubted whether he would republish it, at-all, unless at my wish— I told him, I had no wish on the subject— They would judge for themselves— I received despatches of 12. and 17. October from W. Shaler, and of 13. Novr from A. Gallatin.
