I finished the Letter to the Editor
of the Quincy Patriot, and took it to his Office for publication in the
next Saturday’s paper— Midshipman Joseph H.
Adams came from Charlestown and dined with us— He said he
wished to go with Commodore Hull to
the Mediterranean. That he had called yesterday upon the Commodore at
his lodgings, and asked a recommendation of him to the Secretary of the Navy— He said he
should be very glad to have him with him, but he had not applied to the
Secretary in behalf of any other Officer, wishing to avoid any
appearance of partiality and had advised him to request a recommendation
from me; which I immediately wrote and sent to the Post-Office— I wrote
also to H. L. Ellsworth
Commissioner of the Patent Office, and had exchanged the Quincy Bank 20
dollar bill which Josiah Adams junr had sent me to pay for
entering his caveat; for a Bill of the same amount of the Pennsylvania
Bank of the United States—to enclose it in this Letter— Charles and his wife with his daughter, and John Quincy dined with us, as is the
standing rule for every Wednesday. I am making a collection of
Miscellaneous pamphlet publications of my composition; with the
intention of making up sets for each of my
grandchildren— I make out here one set of twenty-six from
which there are missing 13 which I recollect, some of which it would be
impossible for me now
606now to recover— This evening was beautifully
clear— I saw the Sunset from the Northwestern corner of the porch in
front of Charles’s house at 5 minutes before 6. by my Chronometer—and we
both sought in vain for the sight of the new moon— The eclipse having
been from 3 to 5 yesterday afternoon I wished to ascertain whether the
moon could be seen so soon after the conjunction— Neither Charles nor I
could discover her— Though when the new Moon has been in the morning, I
have often seen her on the Evening of the next day—
