Mackintosh— Chilly Mackintosh Coll Tallazau— Jim Tallazau Ben

These four Creek Indians called on me this morning before breakfast, with a Letter from Govr. Troup of Georgia, and a talk sent by him to certain other Creek Chiefs— The Letter which is in a style similar to that which the same personage used with Mr Monroe, announced to me the murder of the Chief called General Mackintosh, which was confirmed by Chilly who narrowly escaped himself with his life. It was on Saturday the 30th. of last month—that a party of about 400 surrounded, and set fire to his house, and killed him, and another chief his next door neighbour— Troup charges Crowell the Agent with having instigated this massacre, and vows revenge, with a Spirit as ferocious as ever inspired any Creek Indian— I told Chilly that I was deeply distressed at these melancholy tidings, and would do all that would be in my power for him: advising him to call upon the Secretary at War to-morrow— I stopped myself at his house as I was going to Church, and he being gone out, left the papers with word that I would call again after Church— Heard Little 1. Corinthians 12.25: “That there should be no schism in the body.” from the purport of the discourse I should suppose there was some misunderstanding within his own congregation, or between him and them. I asked Mr Charles Bulfinch to call at my house at Noon to-morrow. I again called at Governor Barbour’s house, and found him at home; deeply affected at 151at the intelligence from Georgia; thinking Governor Troup a madman, and very apprehensive of opposition— I desired him to confer with these Indians to-morrow morning; ascertain what they wished to have done; what disposable force may be directed to the threatened part of Georgia; and what answer should be given to Govr Troup.— At home I read Colman Sermon 9. upon the progress and prospects of the Gospel; then heard a Stranger at Mr Baker’s from Acts 13.38.39. “Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins:— And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the Law of Moses.” Here again was justification by faith— Read before and after dinner Johnson’s Sermon 4. upon Charity; an occasional discourse delivered at Bath— Heard Little again in the Evening from Luke 13.20.21. “And again he said, whereunto shall I liken the kingdom of God?— It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.” On returning home I found at my door G. Sullivan just back from his visits to Mr Jefferson and Mr MadisonDr and Mrs Thornton were also visiting at my house.
