20. V:30. Bath with George— The last time that the present morning tides will serve— The day intensely hot, as it has been all the week— Fahrenheit’s thermometer this day at 94. Without interruption at the Office where I could do little or nothing. Evening at the Theatre— The Birth-day or the Reconciliation, by Dibdin, from the German of Kotzebue: and the Midnight Hour—from the Guerre ouverte, or Ruse contre Ruse of Damaniant: originally Spanish— I had seen both these Plays before— The first at New York on the 18th. November 1801 under the title of Fraternal Discord, in a Translation by Dunlop who was I think then a manager of the New-York Theatre— The principal part was then 344performed by Hodgkinson, and I think it was the only time I ever saw him— The other Play I saw on the 29th. of November 1810. at the French Ambassador Caulaincourt’s at St. Petersburg— It was then remarked for its title—particularly by Bussche, the Westphalian Minister; being just at the turning time from the Alliance to the War, between Alexander and Napoleon.
