34215. IV:30. Bathed in the Potowmack this morning with my Son George and Johnson Hellen. Dr. Watkins and a Mr Neilson called upon me at my house— Mr Massey at the Office; and Mr Canning, who came to take leave— He departs to-morrow upon a tour for the summer, to Canada, and to the Eastern States. He had some further Conversation upon the proposals relative to the suppression of the Slave-trade; and upon the disagreement between the Commissioners under the 5th. Article of the Treaty of Ghent. I mentioned to him the suggestion that perhaps we might finally come to an adjustment by an exchange of territory which might accommodate the interests of both parties. I shewed him on the map, where the exchange was proposed. The proposal appeared to be unexpected to him, and not altogether agreeable— He spoke however of it with his usual reserve and caution— Evening at the Play. The Highland Reel— Little Red Riding-Hood; and the Rendez-vous, or Hide and Seek— The last an amusing farce— The rest dull—
