1. VI: Thursday— Captain Trimble, a brother of the Senator of that name from the State of Ohio, came this morning and made application for the appointment of Marshal for the District of Ohio— The present Marshal is a Doctor Hamm, against whom complaints have been made, directly to the President, upon which it is expected that Hamm will be removed— Trimble is very strongly recommended, and has an appearance and manners much in his favour— I called at Mr Calhoun’s Office, and gave him an account of the angry conferences between Mr Canning and me, on the 26th. and 27th. of last Month— Dined at Mr Thompson’s, the Secretary of the Navy, with a Company of about twenty men—No Ladies, but Mrs Thompson and her two daughtersCaptain Elliott of the Navy was of the party— This Officer was the second in command under Perry at the celebrated battle on Lake Erie, of September 1813—and heavy imputations of misconduct rested upon him at that time. A rankling quarrel between Perry and him existed, and was terminated only by Perry’s death— In the duel between Barron and Decatur last March, Elliott was Barron’s Second, and strong rumours were circulated that Elliott prevented an accommodation on the field— Mrs Decatur, who is now living in total seclusion at Kalorama has just published a pamphlet, containing Letters and certificates against Elliott, and particularly a very bitter Letter from Perry to him, written shortly before Perry last sailed from this Country, and a copy of which he left with Decatur— Elliott has published a Letter in defence of himself— The public opinion is divided concerning him; but on the whole favours him more than circumstances will warrant— From Mr Thompson’s I went to Mr W. S. Smith’s where with all the family I spent the Evening.
