1. V:15. Thursday. My wife, unexpectedly got home, between six and seven O’Clock this Morning; and brought with her Thomas Boyd, one of her Sister’s Sons, who went to Mr. W. S. Smith’sCardelli whom she met at Fredericsburg returning from Mr. Madison’s, came in the Steam-Boat with her. Cardelli called, about Noon, and brought me an answer from Mr Madison, to my last Letter— Cardelli has been a fortnight at Monticello and a fortnight at Montpellier, and has taken the Busts of Mr Jefferson and Mr Madison, much to his own Satisfaction and theirs. I received also a Letter from the President dated at Nashville, 14. June, with enclosures, which made it necessary for me to write to Mr Thompson the Secretary of the Navy, and to Mr de la Serna, the Spanish Chargé d’Affaires, which I did at the Office.— Compared with Mr Brent, the Manuscript of the Secret Journals of Congress. Mr Frye, Mr and Mrs W. S. Smith and Mr Forbes, were here this Evening.
