30. IV: Potowmack bath at the Mouth of the Tiber. Wrote the last Letter for Mr Campbell. Rode to the Treasury Office, and held a consultation with Mr Crawford and Mr Wirt, on the Commission to be issued for the trial of Captain Wright— We agreed that the Commission could not issue till after he shall have been legally apprehended and that then the Commission must go to two judges of the Supreme Court, and the judge of the District Court of Georgia— No such Commission has yet issued under the law, and I am much concerned lest by some law quibble, a flaw may be found in it, which will defeat the prosecution— At the Office W. Lee came to say he should go for New-York the day after to-morrow and to offer his services— I dined with General Mason, on his Analostan Island— Mrs Adams was unwell and sent an excuse. General and Mrs Swift, Major Vanderventer and Commodore Decatur were there. The heat continues excessive— We had a slight thunder-shower while at dinner— I found my Carriage at the ferry & came home alone about 9 O’Clock.
