23. VII: Mr Walsh called with a third paper for the National Intelligencer— Rainy and Snowy day. I finished the draft of a Note to Onis. Met Mr Bagot going to the Capitol. He told me that he wished to present several English Gentlemen, to the President, for which I referred him to the Drawing room on Wednesday, and advised him to send before hand their names to Mr Monroe the Presidents brother which he promised he would. I found the President unwell, with a Cold and Cough. At the Office I found a Note from him mentioning that Aury’s deputy, Pazos had gone to him and penetrated to his Cabinet; he referred him to the Secretary of State— Dr Thornton came to the Office— I told him that I had reported to the President his explanations, and his request for a personal interview, which the President had declined. Also that his opinion had not altered of the impropriety of Thornton’s conduct. The Dr first affected to consider it as referring only to his publication of 7. January in the National Intelligencer; said he had been reading it over, and did not see there was anything in it offensive to the President, to whom it was very respectful— I told him the President’s disapprobation was of his transactions with M’Gregor, and then with Mr Rush; and his advising M’Gregor to go to Mr Bagot— He denied the fact— I told him I had it from Bagot himself— He then said he did not advise M’Gregor to go and see Bagot to talk with him about Florida, but as a Scotchman, because his family estates had lately been restored to him— And he had a great distrust of M’Gregor, as soon as he had heard he had talked with Bagot about 312the Florida project— It was near six when I came home from the Office— Mrs Adams who is herself unwell remains at Mrs Frye’s. Captain Davidson came to the Office and gave me the papers concluding the transaction of the sale of my U.S. Bank Stock— There was a Ball at Georgetown this Evening instead of yesterday, for celebrating Washington’s Birth-day; we were invited to it and should have gone had my wife been well— In the Evening I made drafts of Instructions for William Taylor, to go as agent, to Cape Henry St. Domingo; and Jacob Lewis, as Agent at Port au Prince. They engaged me till Midnight.
