27. Mr Montreal was here this morning and informed me that these vessels arrived at Revel, brought lead, and perhaps some sulphur and saltpetre, of all which articles there was now a great scarcity, and which could hardly be imported but from England— That Mr Krehmer had a contract for supplying these Articles, and that as he procured them at a low price he had a tacit permission to introduce a certain quantity of English goods with them. I went into the City— Called upon Mr Meyer and afterwards upon Mr Harris— I had some conversation with him respecting the Crescent, a vessel which now appears to have come here with a spurious Captain.— Also concerning a sailor who has written to me from Revel— He lent me an American Newspaper, the Aurora of 26. June, containing Mr R. Smith’s Vindication of his Resignation. I went round by the Shops, saw the people demolishing the Steeple of the Old Casan Church, and walked home from the Summer-Garden-Bridge— In the Evening I walked again to Kammenoi Ostroff, and was caught in a shower of rain— Mr Jones pass’d the Evening here untill near Midnight.
