26. The storm continued great part of the day, and the weather is so cold that it was scarcely possible to sit and write without a fire— After Sunset, and in the Evening it had the appearance of clearing away.— I walked nearly an hour before, and about as much after dinner. Mr: and Madame Bezerra paid us a visit in the Evening— Mr Bezerra was very full of four store-ships, said to have arrived at Revel from England, as well as of a paragraph in an English paper which says that there is a perfect understanding between the English and Russian Governments, and that these store-ships are laden with arms and ammunition to be used against the common Enemy.— Mr Harris afterwards came in, and says it is nothing at All— That Mr Borel and Mr Schulepoff both assure him there is nothing in it— Mr Harris brought me several letters; and among them one from Mr Everett, with an abstract of the late publication of Mr R. Smith the ex-Secretary of State; written in his own vindication— I employed most of the day in writing.
