28. Mr: Adams and Mr: Strong went off early this morning— I received a Note from Count St: Julien with a letter for Mr: Smith to Count Matternich—and an Answer from Count Romanzoff to my note of yesterday, with a Passport for Mr: Smith, and with letters of recommendation for him to Count Lieven, the Russian Minister at Berlin; to Monsieur de Canicoff the Minister at Dresden—to Count Stakelberg the Minister at Vienna, and to Prince Kurakin the Ambassador at Paris; as I had requested. Mr: Jones who is also going to Vienna, though by a different road from that of Mr: Smith—that is, through Moscow and Kiew, asked me to apply for a Passport for him also to Count Romanzoff— But I understood the Count has not authority to give Passports, except for Courier’s and persons having relation to foreign missions, or to the department of foreign Affairs— Mr: Sonntag, an American Officer in the Navy, but now upon furlough called upon me this morning; he is just arrived from Stockholm, and is going, he says to Odessa— Mr: Woodward also called on me; and I advised him to see Mr: Grammann concerning Mr: Gray’s Brig Palafox, which is one of the vessels not included in the list sent to me by Baron Campenhausen— I had also a morning visit from Mr: Navarro.
