16. Mr: Giles’s penal bill was further postponed untill Thursday next— A bill for altering the Law of the last Session, establishing the seventh judicial Circuit was taken up as in Committee of the whole and after some remarks postponed untill to-morrow, at my request— Mr: Giles proposed a Resolution for the appointment of a Committee to enquire whether the Supreme Court have authority to issue writs of Habeas Corpus &c.—the consideration of this motion was also postponed at my request.— I dined at Mr: Boyd’sMr: George Johnson, and a Mr: Robinson was there— Evening with my wife and Mr: Hellen’s family at Mr: Erskine’s— Cards part of the Evening— Some conversation with Mr: Cook,—and with the late Governor Lewis, of New-York— The rumours of Mr: Rose’s departure are revived.
