12. I walk’d to Cambridge this Morning—J. Smith went with me— Called at Dr: Waterhouse’s; and at 10 O’Clock delivered my 17th: lecture— It was the dryest and dullest that I have ever given; and I look forward with much anxiety to those which are to succeed— I afterwards attended Dr: Waterhouse’s lecture, which was upon the primary matter— Dined at his house, after calling on President Webber, who was gone into Boston— At 2. O’Clock attended the Declamation, which was indifferent— I returned to Boston in the Stage, and met the Town’s Commissioners Judge DavisW. Parsons, John Joy, Tristram Bernard, William Brown, and Redford Webster, at the Selectmen’s chamber— After some explanations from Mr: Bulfinch, and some examination of the Papers, Judge Davis was appointed Chairman and Mr: Webster Secretary, a vote was pass’d to notify the Secretary of the Mill Corporation of our powers, and that we were ready to treat with them, and should meet again, next Monday, at 4. in the afternoon— We then adjourned— Coming home I met Dr: Morse, and afterwards President Webber, who informed me of the issue of a debate in the board of Overseers to modify a vote of the Corporation respecting the readmission of Students dismissed from the College in consequence of the late disturbances there.— The proposed modification was rejected— A motion also in the Senate for a Legislative enquiry into the State, and affairs of the College, was this day negatived by a single vote— The Governor had an epileptic fit this day, at the board of Overseers in the midst of the debate— They immediately adjourned; and he attended again in the afternoon. On returning home I found Mrs: Adams very unwell, with a sick head ache—and she continued ill untill late at Night.
