6. I went with my father to Cambridge, and attended the inauguration of Mr: Samuel Webber as President of the College. At 11. in the morning, a procession was formed from the philosophy chamber to the meeting-house— The New President was inducted by the Lieutenant-Governor Robbins, in a latin Speech which he read indifferently, and by delivery of the Charter, the Book of Records, the Seal, and the Keys. The President then delivered a latin discourse; and an Oration in the same language was pronounced by a young Bachelor of Arts named Carey.— Two Anthems were performed, which with an introductory prayer by Dr: Lathrop, and a closing one by Dr: Elliot constituted the business of the day— The company afterwards all dined in the Hall— In the afternoon we called at Mr: Greenleaf’s, and at Mrs: Lincoln’s— I made some enquiries after accommodations for lodging, during the ensuing Summer, but without obtaining satisfactory information— We returned to Quincy, early in the afternoon.
