18. This morning at Sun-rise my thermometer stood at 9. The severest cold we have yet had— But in the course of the day the weather became very moderate, even to a thaw— At 11. I met the Committee on the part of the President’s Message— We had some conversation but could come to no particular point for want of papers and information— We adjourned about noon.— I then returned a number of visits— Dined at Mr: Merry’sMr: and Mrs: Shaw, and Mr: and Mrs: M’Gillivray from Canada were there; as was the Vice-President, and a company of about twenty-five in number— In the Evening a very numerous company assembled there; but I came home and left them; chiefly at Cards.
