8. The Senate was occupied in discussing several bills and motions, untill 12 o’clock— The time assigned for the choice of a Senator in Congress for 6 years after the 4th: of March next— The number of votes was twenty-six (of course, I did not vote at-all)— There were nineteen votes for John Quincy Adams, and seven for Tompson J. Skinner— The federal side of the house therefore was unanimous to concur in the choice made by the house— Afterwards the choice of a person to preach the next election Sermon was made— There were two trials— At the first Dr: Morse had 12 votes, Reuben Puffer 7 and Paul Litchfield six— At the second Mr: Puffer had fourteen and was chosen— The Jacobins all voted for him to prevent the election of Dr: Morse.— A choice was next made of two persons to superintend the printing of an Edition of the private Statutes. Mr: P. Coffin, and John Davis were chosen— Lastly two agents were chosen as guardians of certain tribes of Indians—Jonathan Woodbury and Eli Little business else was done— In the afternoon I attended the Committee raised to consider and report upon the returns from the banks— Ball in the Evening at Mr: Otis’s—nearly a hundred persons there— Mrs: & Miss Dexter went with us— Miss Dexter came and pass’d the night with 11Caroline; but Mrs: Dexter return’d home to Roxbury— I play’d cards and danced alternately. We came home between 12 and 1. in the morning.
