26. Mr: Johnson gave me some of his papers to look over.— He has been unfortunate in his trusts, and considered as a prey by every man with whom he has dealt— I am strongly apprehensive of the issue of his principal causes now depending.— Went to the treasury-office, and found Mr: Gallatin the Secretary there— The Auditor was not at his office— I received the warrants for the transfer of my 8 per Ct: stock from the books at Philadelphia, to those at Boston— But I found myself charged not only for the 3000 guilders upon Van Berkel’s bill, but for the 20,000 dollars, I drew in December 1796, for the payment of the Antwerp interest. De Wolf’s account in which it is credited, they say was destroyed by the fire— I have so far explained both the transactions that the Secretary assured me the charges would no longer remain upon me but as a matter of form, untill the accounts of the bankers at Amsterdam, and of Mr: De Wolf should authorize a regular credit to me.— Dined at the President’s— Besides Mr: Johnson’s family, Mr: & Mrs: Madison, Miss Payne, and Mr: Lewis, the President’s secretary, form’d the company.— The dinner, as Mrs: Orby Hunter said, was of chilling frigidity— We spent the evening and supp’d at Mr: Hellen’s.
